Growth

This project began by exploring biological processes of growth and decay. I began to reflect on the cycles of growth and decay inherent to the human experience. These two lines of investigation came together in this installation. The project centers around my personal experiences with cancer. Growth and deterioration is inherent in the relationship between the cancer and the patient. Cancer is repulsive yet demands attention. Cancer brings unimaginable pain, fear, and deterioration while eliciting great displays of physical and emotional strength, self reliance and faith. The process of creating these paintings pushed me through my own cycles of anger and acceptance. The panels that make up the painting draw upon the language of microscopy as they crawl across the wall. While on display I intended for the imagery and subject matter to remain ambiguous as my own relationship with the subject will always be complex. Acrylic on pine aprox: 4ft X 7ft.
